Ear Training Intervals with Visuals

Meet the Ear Training Intervaltoons (TM)

Get your first 4 Intervaltoons Free when you subscribe to my newsletter.

In my experience, the easiest way to train the ear to recognize music intervals is to associate each interval with a familiar song. This technique becomes even more powerful when you include visual learning aides.

I created these fun ear training interval visuals, called Intervaltoons (TM), and my students love them! I’ve seen a huge improvement in their ear training since we started using these.

Here are the songs we use:

  • Unison: Jingle Bells
  • 4th: Here Comes the Bride
  • 5th: Star Wars
  • Octave: Over the Rainbow

  • I also have an ear training worksheet with these visuals. The worksheet is another great way to give kids practice with recognizing intervals.

You’re welcome to give these visuals a try–the first 4 Intervaltoons (TM) pictured here are free when you subscribe to my email newsletter. After you’ve tried them, please leave a comment below and let me know how it goes. If teachers find these helpful, I’ll make the other intervals available for purchase.

I like the toon idea to give this a visual!
Perhaps you could design a few more? (If you haven’t already, I realize this post is a few years old) Like, “sing sweet nightingale” from Cinderella for a minor 3rd, “Maria” from West Side Story for augmented 4th, “The entertainer” for minor 6th, “NBC” theme for major 6th, “There’s a Place for Us” from West Side Story for minor 7th, or other songs that go along with those other intervals?

When I was young, we memorized a 6th with “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”.
It never failed me. This, however, using visual images blended to a number with memorable songs is an awesome idea.
My kids brains will light up. I got excited just reading this. Thank you.
