Fun Blues Contest for Your Students!

by Kristin

Your students will be super excited about this creative blues contest. And all you teachers and parents will enjoy seeing the creative songs that kids come up with.

Here’s an example:
Butterfly Blues
I’ve got the blues
The “I am too fat to fly blues”
All day long I’m a tryin’
but just can’t get a flyin’
I’ve got the blues
Oh, I’ve got the blues

In this creative contest, kids come up with their own lyrics for a blues song. I’ll post all the lyrics on the site and everyone will vote on their favorite. The winner gets a $10 Amazon gift card.

After the contest is over, I’ll post a video tutorial showing how to play that blues piece on the piano. Kids will then have a huge collection of fun lyrics they can sing while they play. They’ll be jamming on the piano for hours, having fun singing the blues!

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Listen to the the audio below
Step 2: View the butterfly example at the top of the page
Step 3: Create your own lyrics
Step 4: Email your entry to kristin@eartrainingandimprov.com

If students wish, they can also submit a drawing. Entries are due by Oct 4.

Kids can write about something that gives them the blues or create a silly character and sing about his woes. An older student might write about the anguish of doing homework or dealing with boys/girls. You might encourage kids to draw a picture, like the butterfly above, and write about what makes their character sad.

My piano students (and their parents!) love fun creative contests like this. You’re welcome to view a contest that I did with students ages 4-6 here: Musical Creations

I’m glad to hear you’re in, Kelly. I’ve seen some of the neat things your students have accomplished and I’m excited to see what they create for this contest!
