How to Play Silent Night By Ear

by Kristin

How to Play Silent Night by Ear Use this free printout to teach kids how to play silent night by ear. Just follow the directions on my post How to Teach Kids to Play by Ear.

Give this exercise a try- your student will be excited that he’s playing by ear. Even my very young students have been able to learn this piece and they’re so proud of themselves.

Playing by ear means that the child is relieved of the burden of only being able to play when she’s carrying music. At Christmastime, kids often have unexpected opportunities to play at family parties. Prepare your child with this piece and everyone will be delighted. Your child will get a huge confidence boost when grandparents, aunts and uncles hear her play and then congratulate her.

Everyone loves this beautiful Christmas carol, and because it is so beloved it naturally lends itself to expressive playing. When kids learn how to play Silent Night by ear, they aren’t focusing on note reading, but instead on how the music sounds. Once they are comfortable with the melody, you can easily work on expressiveness and you’ll find your child or student very inclined to play beautifully.

You can watch a video tutorial on how to improvise a gorgeous left hand accompaniment here.
